FAQ

Before you install

Is this the same as the App Store version?

The Mac app is distributed directly by us, signed with Apple's Developer ID and notarized by Apple. It checks for updates automatically and asks before installing them.

Does my audio leave my Mac?

On-device transcription processes audio locally. The finished transcript is saved to your account. If you enable Keep Playback, the selected audio or video playback copy is uploaded too. Cloud transcription uploads media; translation and AI features can send transcript text to cloud services.

Can every supported Mac use On-device transcription?

The Mac app and Safari extension support macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon. On-device transcription separately requires macOS 26 or later, an available Apple Speech engine, and downloadable speech assets for your selected language. If these are unavailable, you can choose a cloud transcription mode; Silestis does not switch automatically.

Why does it need a Safari extension?

The extension is what lets Silestis see the video on the page you are watching. Safari keeps extensions disabled until you enable them yourself; the app walks you through it once.

Do I need an account?

Yes. Your transcripts, credits and plan belong to an account so they stay available across the Mac app, Safari and the web.

Where is my data stored?

Account data, transcripts and retained playback media use EU-configured storage. Source media is deleted after transcription unless you explicitly keep a playback copy.

Start from the supported lecture page you already use.

Open the video and click Silestis to start a transcript, summary, and notes workflow on the page. Timestamp-capable modes can also return cited answers, including when no source transcript exists.
